your senior‘s words is not bad but it is not absolute right 。
i think it depend on many factor，if you would be  the chinese academy of science  graduate when your time must be lack ，because you will take more time in lab ，but that not means you have no time for  appointment。and you you will be graduate in school the leisure-time maybe enough。
anyway ，it is not seem that so terrible like your thought 。
it is said that many party celebrated in the the chinese academy of science among students ，such as badminton race  、mountain climbing.....。
if you have one dream just to pursuit it when you are young，don't keep  full of worries，come on
