¡¾Pure water¡¿Nuclear Runoff Worries Beijing .

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB ... 50360954375894.html By BRIAN SPEGELE BEIJING¡ªChina expressed concern Friday about Japan's discharge of some three million gallons (11.5 million liters) of radiation-contaminated water into the Pacific Ocean, and encouraged its neighbor to "act in accordance with relevant international laws." The statement, published on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was the first official response from the Chinese side, which has struggled to ease public anxiety about the nuclear crisis set off in Japan by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami Japan began earlier this week to discharge water contaminated with low levels of radiation¡ªtoo low to threaten human health, Japanese officials said¡ªto prevent a more-dangerous release at the reactor site. "China is paying close attention to the course of events" in Japan, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in the statement. "We ask Japan to provide China with timely, comprehensive and accurate information." Japan did not consult its neighbors before deciding to dump the water, but said it did advise them of its decision afterward. South Korea said Tuesday it would seek more information from Tokyo about the decision to allow Tokyo Electric Power Co., or Tepco, the operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactors, to dump the radioactive water into the ocean. Radiation fears caused panic buying of salt in some Chinese cities last month by people who thought it could protect them from airborne radiation. Authorities have heightened monitoring for radiation in the aftermath of Fukushima, and while trace amounts believed to come from Japan have been detected in many Chinese cities, officials say those amounts are too low to be a threat to public health. The state-run Xinhua news agency reported Thursday that trace levels of the radioactive isotope iodine-131 were discovered on spinach plants in the cities of Beijing, Tianjin and the province of Henan. Officials said the amounts were between 0.1% and 0.3% of the legal limit, and posed no threat to public safety. |
