At 20 years of age the will reigns; at 30 the wit; at 40 the judgement.--Benjamin Franklin As I stand equally between Will and Wit, I find myself ruminating about what it means to be a quarter-century old. Now, I am aware that I'm still young and am by no means old. Yet, I feel I'm at that age where doors start to be closed off. And perhaps that's for the best--I can't do everything, right? I recently have been tempted by various job offers--clinical research, human rights, travel writing--and have been finding it difficult to focus on medical school. I absolutely loved running various clinical trials when I was a manager and I felt as though I was contributing to a larger body of knowledge. The work I did in human and civil rights on a local level has opened an opportunity to make change at the international stage. And the travel writing gig--I love travel and I love writing, what could be better?? The reason I'm having such a difficult time focusing on class is that these offers and opportunities remind me that I'm not getting any younger, that I should jump at opportunities that rarely present themselves. After all, is becoming a doctor by 30 worth giving up the "Best Years" of my life? Instead of letting the Will of my 20s dictate, I've done much soul-searching and sought mentor advice. I've decided that at 25 and still fresh on the path of medicine, it's worth traveling further before jumping on another. I honestly admit that the decision to pursue medicine is not a single decision made at one point in time. It's one I make almost every month, if not every week. I remind myself of all I plan to achieve as a doctor and that though some paths and doors may be closed to me now, new ones will open in the future by virtue of being a doctor. |
