it's not written by me I just had a lovely chat with one of my dearest friends. we have always been able to talk about big things -- what is important to us and how that is evolving, what our experiences have taught us. I love hearing her perspective, because she's not just smart, but is also so thoughtful and has a great outlook on life. Tonight's conversation centered on the idea that life should be a series of decisions we make, not a series of events that happen to us. We talked about how we can accomplish the most by making decisions we can stand by, and how this means finding the fine balance between considering external views without neglecting our ever-important gut. Trusting my gut has been one of the most difficult barriers to reaching my full potential. Watching my most intelligent friends struggle with confidence academically, in daily choices and even in major life decisions, I see that I'm not alone. Sometimes I wonder if there is some sort of inverse relationship between intellect and self-confidence. I don't mean to say that I think I am surrounded by people who constantly feel bad about themselves, but maybe I am trying to say that I do feel like I'm constantly surrounded by people who do not see how truly amazing and brilliant they are. I think several confounded variables make us a group of dwellers and worriers, but regardless of why, a lack of trust in ourselves may be holding us back. We have all come this far in our lives, and although our lives and careers are just beginning, we have made sound decisions to get us here. This, I think, should give us confidence that we are capable of making good choices. As long as we continue making decisions from a good place, I think this confidence and letting go of fear of failure will help us reach our full potential. After all, how can we expect patients to have confidence in our decisions if we do not have it ourselves? |
