[交流] 一个神童: 杰出的华裔数学家Terence Tao(陶哲轩)

Terence Tao(陶哲轩)，在ICM 2002上做过一小时报告，2006年Fields Medal的

热门人选，2003年的Clay奖得主。况且是IMO历史上最年轻的金牌选手（1988年，13岁）

。他的中文名字是陶哲轩，虽然他一句中文都不会讲。

一是文中提到的他11岁就参加过IMO。其实他连续参加了三届。1986年，在华沙，11岁的Tao就获得了铜牌；1987年，在哈瓦那，他获得银牌；1988年，堪培拉，他终获金牌。关于这一点，见http://www.amt.canberra.edu.au/olympian.html二是1992年17岁的Tao在Flinders University取得学士学位，并且是First ClassHons。其后获Fulbright Postgraduate Student Award去Princeton University，

21岁获得博士学位，24岁升为UCLA正教授，发表论文横跨三个学科。解决了几个著名猜想。他的导师是Wolf奖获得者E. M. Stein。Stein说过Tao是百年难遇的奇才（在杭州ICM 2002“调和分析及其应用”卫星会议上听同行们讲的，未经证实）。

BTW: Tao的大师兄Charles Fefferman是更加了不起的人物：20岁在Princeton获Ph.D., 22岁在University of Chicago成为美国历史上最年轻的Full Professor，29岁获FieldsMedal。

陶哲轩（Terence Tao，小名Terry，1975年7月17日生于澳大利亚阿德莱德），是中国裔数学家，主要研究调和分析、偏微分方程、组合数学、分析数论和表示论。
从1992年至1996年，他是普林斯顿大学研究生，指导教授是埃利亚斯·施泰因(Elias Stein)。他现在为加洲大学洛杉矶分校的终身数学教授。

在1986年、1987年和1988年，陶哲轩是国际数学奥林匹克最年轻的参赛者，依次赢得铜牌、银牌和金牌。他未到13岁已赢得金牌，这纪录还没有人打平。

他在2000年获颁塞勒姆奖(Salem)，2002获颁博谢纪念奖(B?cher)，和在2003年获颁克雷研究奖，以表扬他对分析学的贡献，当中包括挂谷猜想和wave map。在2005年，他获得利瓦伊·L·科南特奖(Levi L. Conant)（获奖者还有艾伦·克努森(Allen Knutson)）。

He tedtaking high school classes at age 8, and by 11, he was learningcalculus and entering international mathematics competitions—andperxxxxing well in them. He earned his Ph.D. from Princeton Universityat 21 and joined the faculty of UCLA's mathematics departmentthe same year, where he was recruited for his exceptional technicalpower and versatility.Math has been Tao's passion for as far back as he can remember."I always did like numbers," he says. "My parents told me that whenI was 2 or 3, I taught other kids how to count with blocks. When Iwas 5, I remember that I loved playing games with numbers. Of course,there's more to math than manipulating numbers."

Tao's primary branch of mathematics is a theoretical field calledharmonic analysis, an advanced xxxx of calculus that uses equationsfrom physics. He also does work in a related field, nonlinear partialdifferential equations, and in an entirely distinct field, algebraicgeometry.One of Tao's proofs of a perplexing problem in harmonic analysisextends more than 50 pages, in which he and two colleagues obtained themost precise known estimate of the size of a particular geometricdimension in Euclidean space. The issue involved the most space-efficientway to rotate a needle in three dimensions, a question of interest totheoretical mathematicians; Tao and his colleagues provided the bestlower limit of any mathematician's.Raised
in Australia, the soft-spoken Tao teaches freshman calculus andgraduate courses and has been awarded two national fellowships this year,from the Packard Foundation and the Clay Mathematics Institute. The ClayInstitute selected Tao as one of three Long-Term Prize Fellows, along withmathematicians from Harvard and Princeton."Maybe when I'm in my 60s, I'll look back at what I've done," says Tao,"but now I would rather work on the problems."

陶哲軒，1975年7月17日生於澳洲阿德萊德。
根據Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia，他在SAT中取得760的成績。你可能覺得沒什　出奇，我許多朋友都有800。不過，他是在八歲那年獲得這成績的。
他分別在1986、1987及1988連續三年依次取得IMO銅獎、銀獎及金獎，是IMO歷史上最年輕的金獎得主，當年他還未夠十三歲。

他十七歲取得一級榮譽學士學位，二十一歲在Princeton University獲取phD，二十四歲成為UCLA的教授。

Tao的大师兄Charles Fefferman是更加了不起的人物

当代神童之最应该是现任普林斯顿数学系主任查尔斯·费佛曼
（52岁，Charles L. Fefferman，Tao的大师兄）。此公12岁学完微积分，17岁毕业于
马里兰大学，20岁拿到普林斯顿博士，22岁在芝加哥大学晋升正教授，
24岁完成的论文最终获得费尔茨奖，也就是数学的诺贝尔奖。这些成就
还不是他最传奇的。数学界有一个关于费佛曼教授的口头传说。说他17
岁读研究生时，有一天教授在黑板上列出"本学科历史上的十大难题"。小费
那天迟到，不知原委，以为是教授布置作业。只管抄了回去。一个星期之
后，两眼红肿的费佛曼找到教授，大发牢骚："你怎么给这么难的作业？
我几天没睡觉，也只作出了四道题，实在是没办法。只能做多少交多少
了。"那教授差点没晕过去
