Significant advances in the sintering and control of optical properties of ceramics have taken place. An understanding of complex alkali oxides-aluminia-siIica phase relations has been gained, and knowledge of multicomponent silicon nitride-meta| oxides-nitride-carbide systems has been greatly advanced. The ways in which phase diagrams are used to make unusual composites of refractory oxides and nonoxides have undergone revolutionary changes.
