[交流] 【Pure water】Obama says government shutdown stalls economy

US President Barack Obama says the economic recovery will stall if Congress can't agree on spending cuts and avoid a government shutdown. But lawmakers appear to be moving closer to a compromise.

In his weekly radio and internet address, U.S. President Barack Obama urges Congress to find "common ground" and spare the country a damaging government shutdown, as U.S. lawmakers prepare for a showdown over spending cuts.

US President Barack Obama said, "Next week, Congress will focus on a short-term budget. For the sake of our people and our economy, we cannot allow gridlock to prevail."

On Capitol Hill, Republicans and Democrats are battling over federal spending.

They must agree to a stopgap measure next week to keep funding the government, or it will run out of cash and nonessential services will be halted.

"I urge and expect them to find common ground so we can accelerate, not impede, economic growth. It won't be easy. There will be plenty of debates and disagreements and neither party will get everything it wants. Both sides will have to compromise." Obama said.

Republicans, who control the U.S. House of Representatives after winning big in November elections, promised to shrink the government and curb the deficit.

Democrats, who control the Senate, warn that drastic cuts could undermine the country's still-fragile economic recovery.

The U.S. budget deficit is forecast to reach a record $1.65 trillion this year, or almost 11 percent of U.S. output, under a budget proposed by Obama.
