xxx, as one of the best-known members of this group, (exhibited) excellent dielectric and optical properties. Moreover, xxx had been widely used as a precursor to synthesize single phase xxx in the “columbite” process [10]. xxx melts congruently at about 1840 K. xxx crystals were grown by chemical transport method [11, 12] (early at 1968), then by the flux method [13-15] in 1982 and 2004. But there were two common problems in the above two methods that the size of the grown crystals was small and the impurity was unavoidable. Polgár et al. grew xxx crystal using the czochralski method in 1995 [16], but the impurity was also unavoidable for using crucibles. Brück et al. grew xxx crystal fiber using the laser-heated pedestal method [17] in 1993, and avoided the impurity, but the grown crystal fiber had small diameter.
In contrast to the above methods, the optical floating zone method (was )more suitable for growing high-quality single crystals, because of crucible-free condition, atmosphere-controllable environment and steep temperature gradients along the growth direction, which (allowed) for more stable and faster crystal growth [14, 18-21]. Furthermore, the size of the obtained crystals by the optical floating zone method is usually bigger than that by the flux method, the laser-heated pedestal method and the chemical transport method. In this paper, xxx single crystal was grown by the optical floating zone method for the first time, and its photoluminescence property was investigated. |
