【Pure water】Heavy rains continue to hit Bolivia

Heavy rains continued to pound Bolivia on Wednesday. Overflowing rivers have inundated over ten towns and washed out bridges and highways in the Andean nation. The Beni River in eastern Bolivia spilled over its banks and into the tourist town of Rurrenabaque. Locals in the town that's a gateway to a large ecological reserve, walked through water in the streets. And local news sources reported it was the most severe flooding the area had seen in 20 years. Rains also punished localities in the highland province of La Paz. Hanging bridges there were left dangling and travel between villages was difficult. The main highway was washed out, as were several smaller dirt roads. In the tropical region of Los Yungas, landslides left cars trapped on highways as travelers were forced to walk across damaged roads. Officials say some communities are at risk of being isolated by the washouts, and they are working to get emergency response plans up and running. Viviana Caro, Planning minister said "The government is working to turn hand over food and medical attention. Highway officials are working on the roads. Starting with the emergency decree, we hope the city government can activate their budget and plans they have set up for these cases." Meteorologists attribute the flooding to the La Nina weather phenomenon. Civil defense authorities say rains have killed 45 people since January and affected some 6,900 families. |
