【Pure water】New Zealand PM Focus is on search and rescue efforts

More than 18 hours have passed since a devastating earthquake collapsed buildings across Christchurch, New Zealand. The destructive force of the quake left many structures in the city in ruins, killing scores of people. The country's Prime Minister says the focus is on search and rescue efforts. John Key, Prime Minister of New Zealand said "At the moment the one hundred percent focus has to be on search and rescue and also assisting those that want to leave Christchurch, there is quiet a lot of people have been displaced obviously from the accommodation, tourists and alikes, so we will be air bridging them out to Wellington and Auckland using military aircraft and Air New Zealand has been kind enough to offer flights to who wants to and from Christchurch for 50 dollars, so there will be a fair bit of that movement today I would have thought." John Hamilton, Civil Defense Director said "Power is still out to large areas of the city as well as telecommunication and as I understand it there's larger areas of the city without drinking water on. The focus overnight has been with rescue teams using New Zealand based search and rescue teams... The first Australian teams are due to touch down now and the subsequent Australian teams will arrive during today. They will be deployed straight into the city to assist the New Zealand teams. The welfare center has obviously been very busy overnight as has the Christchurch hospital and medical facilities. They're working, they're probably at full capacity, but people are being well looked after." |
