The two tables describe travels made by British in terms of purposes and destinations respectively during 1994 and 1998. As the first table illustrates, in all five years from 1994 to 1998, holiday travel comprised a large percent of the reasons why UK citizens visited abroad, as much as 75% of total number. After that came purpose of business travel, which included 3,155 out of 22,072 in 1994 and 3,957 people of 28,828 in 1998. It was the visits to friends and relatives that took a minor percentage, 2,689, 2,628, 2774, 3,051, 3,181 in five different years respectively. Sitting on the last position, variety of other reasons only shared insignificant number of people who went abroad. 19,371 out of 22,072 and 24,519 out of 28,828 people went to Western Europe in 1994 and 1998, and the same percentage of people going to Western Europe can be summarized in the three other years. How interesting it is that only 919 out of 22,072 people went to North America in 1994. However, the number almost doubled in 1998, 1,823 out of 28,828. Other areas excluding Western Europe and North America attracted approximately 10% of total people, 1,782 of 22,072 in 1994, 1,905 of 24,949 in 1996 and the same percentage is in other years. Overall, conclusion could be easily made that among reasons of travelling, holiday was the major one why people travelled and UK people were more likely to visit Western Europe than any other places. |
