·¶ÎÄ£ºThe primary goal of technological advancement

The speaker contends that technology¡¯s primary goal should be to increase our efficiency for the purpose of affording us more leisure time. I concede that technology has enhanced our efficiency as we go about our everyday lives. Productivity software helps us plan and coor4dinate projects; intranets, the Internet, and satellite technology make us more efficient messengers; and technology even helps us prepare our food and access entertainment more deficiently. Beyond this concession, however, I find the speaker¡¯s contention indefensible from both an empirical and a normative standpoint.

The chief reason for my disagreement lies in the empirical proof. With technological advancement comes diminished leisure time. In 1960, the average U.S. family included only one breadwinner, who worked just over 40 hours per week. Since then the average workweek has increased steadily to nearly 60hours today; and in most families there are now two breadwinners. What explains this decline in leisure despite increasing efficiency that new technologies have brought about? I contend that technology itself is the culprit behind the decline. We sue the additional free time that technology affords us not for leisure but rather for work. As computer technology enables greater and greater office productivity, it also raises our employees¡¯ expectation¡ªor demands-for production. Further technological advances breed still greater efficiency and, in turn, expectations. Our spiraling workload is only exacerbated by the competitive business environment in which nearly all of us work today. Moreover, every technological advance demands our time and attention-in order to learn how to use the new technology. Time devoted to keeping pace with technology depletes time for leisure activities.

I disagree with the speaker for another reason as well: the suggestion that technology¡¯s chief goal should be facilitate leisure is simply wrongheaded. There are far more vital concerns that technology can and should address. Advanced in biotechnology can help cure and prevent diseases; advances in medical technology can allow for safer, less invasive diagnosis and treatment; advances in genetics can allow for safer, less invasive diagnosis and treatment; advances in genetics can help prevent birth defects; advances in engineering and chemistry can improve the structural integrity of our building, road, bridge, and vehicles; information technology enables education while communication technology facilitates global participation in the democratic process. In short, health, safety, education, and freedom-and not leisure- are the proper final objectives of technology. Admittedly, advances in these areas sometimes involve improved efficiency; yet efficiency is merely a means to these more important ends.

In sum, I find indefensible the speaker¡¯s suggestion that technology¡¯s value lies chiefly in the efficiency and resulting leisure time it can afford us. The suggestion runs contrary to the overwhelming evidence that technology diminishes leisure time, and it wrongly places leisure ahead of goals such as health, safety, education, and freedom as technology¡¯s ultimate aims.

MY ISSUE 472×Ö
I agree with the speaker insofar as that, sometimes the technology can enhance people¡¯s efficiency in order to give them more leisure time. However, the speaker¡¯s idealism is just a side. As every coin has its two sides, sometimes the technological advancement also makes people¡¯s lives busier.

First of all, technology has helped people to make their life more leisure as well as makes people¡¯s work more efficiency. Nowadays, as a beneficent of technological development of different tools, We all can feel that, due to the communication technology the world is get smaller than before. For example, wherever we are, we may use mobile phone, e-mail, worldwide web, even wireless computer network to get contact with each other. And express deliveries in nowadays include highway, subway, airline and so on. Of course, people can go to anywhere they want freely and conveniently by plane, cars, or magnetic suspension train. All of above give people a more leisure life, because when they got home they have more time and more various to choose the recreations such as watching TV or DVD problem, listening CD or mp3, playing net games and singing karaoke. The technologies also improve people¡¯s working efficiency and their entertainment because they can use high-speed computer, facsimile machine, printing machine, net meeting and so on. All of these show that, because of the human being¡¯s wisdoms, we lived in a highly civilized and developed society.

Second, at the same time, any technological advancement requires people to take time get familiar and get used to. So when people sharing greatly comfortable life and convenience of technological advancement, people meanwhile face more challenging problems, particularly, with the increasingly rapid pace of people¡¯s life and work, many people have to spend much more spare time to learn newly-created knowledge and skills in order to keep themselves more competent and competitive to their positions, otherwise they will be obsolete. Take the technicians of high-tech sectors as an instance, it is especially true to them which is well known because rapidly pace of knowledge evolution, they have to learn new knowledge day and night, and some even live in office and go back home once a month, which is really appalling. As a result, in today¡¯s society, under the pressure of fierce competition and the quick change of technology, people have a busier life because the technological development actually requires people to learn more and to do more.

Conclusion, people should pay close attention to the using of advanced technology. As a two-edge arrow, it¡¯s glad to see how our achievements made in the technology have change people¡¯s life to a more efficient, colorful and meaningful. But it also gives people more pressure and makes their life busier than before. So if people deal with it properly, their life will become better and better.

Compare the hours spent working by the average person in a first world country like America or Japan to the time spent on survival by our nomadic ancestors . Technological advancement has not exactly led to increased leisure time - though it certainly has increased leisure opportunities, and perhaps even quality.
