Catalysis is the process of manipulating the rate of a chemical reaction by introducing an extra substance (catalyst) that by the end of the reaction is not chemically altered; the catalyst simply provides an alternative reaction pathway. It was for his contributions to this field that Gerhard Ertl received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2007. Since then the three large Berlin universities in Berlin in conjunction with the Cluster of Excellence "Unifying Concepts in Catalysis" (UniCat) and Ertl¡¯s home institute, the Fritz Haber Institute (FHI), and along with financial support from the chemical company BASF, have created an award that strives to recognize outstanding investigators and research in the field of catalysis.

  

The Winner is...

The winner of this year¡¯s Gerhard Ertl Lecture Award was Prof. Jens N?rskov for his ground-breaking theoretical work in the field of catalysis. N?rskov and co-workers use computational methods to screen for new catalysts that could provide an increase in catalysis activity and selectivity. This year the jury, comprised of four members ¨C one from each University/Institute, consisted of UNICAT members Prof. Dr. Joachim Sauer from the HU Berlin, Prof. Dr. Matthias Drieß from the TU Berlin, and Prof. Dr. Robert Schlögl from the FHI, as well as Prof. Dr. Eckart R¨¹hl from the FU Berlin. In reference to his award, Nørskov ¨C who has a special relationship with the FHI as he has been a member of its advisory board for 16 years ¨C explained how Ertl has been a guiding figure throughout his career and receiving an award with his namesake is therefore a ¡°particular honor¡±.

A true veteran of the field

Despite the heavy rains, many students and scientists had collected on December 10th to attend the award presentation event at the HU Berlin. Prof. Schlögl introduced Prof. Nørskov and referred to the numerous tables in N?rskov¡¯s papers in which he identifies ¡°dubious catalysts¡± that would otherwise be overlooked by experimentalists and theoreticians alike, however once produced are often helpful to both. Following the opening speech, Prof. Dr. Rainer Diercks from BASF highlighted Nørskov¡¯s long and marked career; having published many highly-cited articles on catalysis, Nørskov is a true veteran of the field. Prof. Nørskov was then given the floor to deliver his lecture entitled ¡®Tailoring of surface chemical properties using electronic structure theory¡¯.

  

Development of solar fuels

Prof. N?rskov described how the catalytic properties of a material are solely determined by its electronic structure. Thus, he argued, in order to create new catalysts one should look into tailoring the electronic structure of a material by changing its composition and physical structure. Nørskov, whose main focus is on catalytic reactions on surfaces (heterogeneous catalysis), explained how a good catalyst represents a compromise between providing a strong bond with the surface, to encourage adsorption, and a weak bond, to allow for desorption back into the gas phase. N?rskov used the example of the catalysis of splitting water to present his theoretical approach; he suggested that understanding this process is critical for the development of solar fuels. However, he cautioned that even if fitting candidates are identified, questions still remain such as can we make them, are they stable, and can they be commercially produced on a mass level? With a smile to the audience, he answered his own question aloud: ¡°I¡¯ll leave that up to some of the people in this room to determine.¡±
