【Share】Thailand and Cambodia exchange fire for a fourth day

Machine-gun and artillery fire has been heard for a fourth day acorss the border between Thailand and Cambodia despite rounds of talks and ceasefires. The clashes caused many casualties to both sides...soldiers and civilians, and many people are said to have fled their homes. These started by the heavy shelling that took place on Sunday night. At the entrance to the Phra Viham temple national park, the last checkpoint before you enter the conflict zone...soldiers on the highest alert. No fighting during the day on Monday, but the ceasefire is well and truly broken. From the guardhouse, evidence of the shelling from the night before, the heaviest barrage since this conflict broke out. Windows shattered, their shards lying amidst discarded decorations from the Chinese New Year...the shell cases put out on display. A local commander told us that the situation had stabilized and there was communication with Cambodian forces nearby, but they were clearly unprepared to stand down at this stage. The nearby villages are deserted...houses abandoned; the residents have all been evacuated in the last few days. This house took a direct hit, everything destroyed but the four walls... Although violence broke out in 2008 and 9, never before has it reached this far inside. Convoys of soldiers and supplies are also being sent in to reinforce those already in place. Although previous ceasefires had agreed to limit troop numbers, those agreements are now void. |
