Tunisian Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi (GAN-OO-SHI) has confirmed he will not step down, following a reshuffle of his cabinet. The reshuffle is seen as a bid to address the grievances of large numbers of Tunisians calling for the ousting of ministers from the former ruling RCD party. Ghannouchi (GAN-OO-SHI) is now the only member of the former ruling party within the interim government. Three independents were appointed to the ministries of the interior, foreign affairs and defense. The new cabinet now consists of 12 new ministers and 9 existing ministers. Ghannouchi (GAN-OO-SHI) says that the new lineup was agreed after consultations with all political parties and civil groups. He says the interim government will remain until free elections are held in Tunisia, organized by an independent body and monitored by international observers. In response to the reshuffle, the country's powerful labor union-the UGTT says it will back the new government. But despite the backing, the UGTT has refused to take an active part in the administration. |
