【Share】Abbas returns to West Bank after document leaks

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has returned to a hero's welcome in the West Bank, following his visit to Cairo and it is his first public appearance since Al-Jazeera made public the documents, which allegedly, detail broad concessions made to Israel during peace negotiations. The correspondent takes a closer look. Hundreds of supporters greeted Abbas at his West Bank headquarters. The recent publication of hundreds of leaked documents by Al Jazeera has rocked the already shaky middle east peace process. The latest disclosure alleges Abbas secretly agreed to a very limited return of refugees to Israel, along with an Israeli annexation of parts of east Jerusalem. That vastly differs from the Palestinian's longstanding demand that all refugees have the right of return. Abbas says his position is well known, and accused Al-Jazeera of "forgery and distortion. " Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian President, said, "The most important of the Palestinian demands we say that openly- we are ready to die for it - Jerusalem is the capital of Palestine. " Ahmed Qureia and Saeb Erekat were the chief negotiators quoted in the leaked documents. On Tuesday, Saeb Erekat returned to his hometown of Jericho, and was also welcomed by cheering crowds. Saeb Erekat, Palestinian Negotiator, said, "We are facing the most severe smear campaign in the history of journalism. Al Jazeera is saying that we are guilty until we get executed and after our execution we should get an unfair trial. That is called neutral journalism 2011 Al Jazeera style. I challenge Al Jazeera to publish the Palestinian official papers and positions on Jerusalem, borders, settlements, refugees and all other issues. " Meanwhile, in the west bank town of Hebron, UN Envoy to the Middle East, Robert Serry, played down the leaks. Robert Serry, UN Midest Envoy, said, "I think part of the commentary I'm reading is giving not the right picture, is out of context and is an inaccurate description of what I know of what has been going on. " Since the initial Al Jazeera broadcast on Sunday, Abbas aides have rushed to launch a damage limitation exercise, challenging the authenticity of some of the documents. They say quotes have been taken out of context, as part of what they describe as an orchestrated smear campaign against the West Bank leadership. |
