[交流] 【Share】Winter drought wreaks havoc in North China

According to the statistics from the National flood control and drought relief headquarters, more than four million hectares of crops have been damaged by the dry spell. Major agricultural provinces including Hebei, Shanxi, Shandong, Henan, Jiangsu and Anhui have been parched by the worst drought in 60 years.
Shandong Province has been particularly hard hit, with most regions seeing their last rainfall more than one hundred days ago, and some even suffering the worst drought in 200 years. James Kim takes a look at how residents are fighting the effects of the drought.
Cracking land, withering crops and depleted reservoirs.
These are what residents in Shandong Province have to endure during the winter drought.
This Baita reservoir, is a crucial lifeline.
Being the main water source for four thousand hectares of wheat, the reservoir is facing the danger of drying up.
Since last October, crops have not been irrigated even once by water from the reservoir.
Kong Lingzhu, Head of Flood Control, Drought Relief Office, Qufu City, said, "We have twenty four more reservoirs like this, all are suffering the same fate of the Baita reservoir. Meanwhile, thirty thousand hectares of wheat crops have heen damaged by the drought, and the situation will worsen if the dry weather continues. "
Residents are also suffering the long-lasting drought in Qingdao.
As locals fear that their taps could be turned off, many are starting to store water, including Ms. Li.
She says some residents dug a hole on a frozen river, prompting her to come here to fetch water everyday.
Local resident Mrs. Li said, "We can't find other water sources elsewhere, and only rely on the water here. I  can't make sure how long it will last. "
On higher ground, getting drinking water is much more difficult.
Seventy year-old Mr. Yin fetches water from a puddle nearby a river.
He has to make the trip three or four times a day, carrying about 25 kilograms of water each trip.
Local resident Mr. Yin said, "At the beginning, water was abundant, but will be running short soon. We have to save water as much as possible. "
To make matters worse, despite the efforts of local authorities to install pump stations and anti-drought facilities, the dry spell continues to lower supplies.
Residents are bracing for the rare winter drought in the coming days.

The weather is so abnormal that Beijing hasn't seen a snow fall yet.
