An Israeli inquiry commission, has released its report, investigating last May's raid on the Gaza-bound flotilla, sailing from Turkey. The document, defends the actions of the country's troops, and claims that inernational laws were not violated. While offering some criticism of last year's takeover of the Mavi Marmara flotilla ship, Israel's inverstigative commission's conclusions exonerate the government, military, and individual soldiers. The nearly 300-page report says the blockade of Hamas-ruled Gaza, the decision to intercept the protest convoy in international waters, and the use of lethal force by troops were all legal actions. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supports the document. Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister, said, "The report published today clearly shows that the blockade of Gaza is legal. It shows that the enforcement of that blockade last May is legal. And it shows that the Israeli soldiers who boarded the Marmara acted legally, and in self-denfense. I hope that all those who rush to judgment against Israel, and against its soldiers, will read this report, and learn the truth about what happened." Investigators say their report was based on the testimony of Israeli leaders, including the Prime Minister and Defense Minister, as well as military officers, in addition to statements from the soldiers themselves, along with 1,000 hours of video footage taken from the military, the Mavi Marmara, and passengers on the vessel. The commission adds that activists who were aboard the ship refused invitations to bear witness. The findings are unlikely to put to rest the international controversy over Israel's actions, which badly damaged bilateral relations with Turkey, and led to the formation of a special UN panel. Naval commandos killed nine activists during the May 31st operation, after passengers staunchly resisted takeover efforts. The flotilla was spearheaded by a Turkish Islamic aid group known by the acronym IHH. Activsits say the convoy was aimed at bringing attention to the ongoing Gaza embargo, imposed after Hamas militants captured an Israeli soldier in 2006, and tightened when the group serized control of the terriory a year later. Ankara recalled its Ambassador to Tel Aviv after the incident, and ties between the two capitals have not recovered. |
