【Pure water】Drought Affecting More than 2 Million People in China

China's drought relief authority says rainfall dropped between 20 to 90 percent compared with the same period last year in the provinces of Henan, Shanxi, Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui and Shaanxi. Chief Meteorologist from the National Climate Center, Zhang Peiqun, says unusual dryness in the north and snowy conditions in southern China are caused by the La Nina weather pattern. "Since November, cold air has frequently visited southern China, and precipitation is formed when cold air meets warm air. Last year, the warm air was not very strong, and cold air was strong. So the cold air and warm air met mainly in the south, hence theYellow River and Huaihe river area saw no precipitation." The drought has affected winter wheat crops in 17 percent of the wheat growing areas in northern China, while other parts of the country were struck by freezing rain and heavy snow. Yin Changwen, a drought relief official from Shandong Province, says the situation in his province is the worst in recorded history. "Since September 2010, there has been no effective rainfall for more than 100 days in Shandong. This is really rare. According to probability analysis, the frequency of a drought like this is once in nearly 60 years. In some cities, the frequency is once in nearly 200 years." It's estimated that the drought has affected more than 20,000 square kilometers of farm land in Shandong. Yin says the damage is not too big at the moment thanks to sufficient reservoirs and a high ground water level. The biggest concern is if the drought persists until May. "What we are worried about is a continuous drought that lasts until March, April, May, maybe even June, since spring in our province usually doesn't see much rainfall. If that happens, we are concerned about drinking water problems for both people and livestock." Yin Changwen says the province has recently invested 50 million yuan in drought relief.
