ISSUE36 - "The greatness of individuals can be decided only by those who live after them, not by their contemporaries." History is full of shining stars: those who have made great contributions to our society in every field--academia, politics, and sports and so on. The greatness of them lies in the values they created which have transcended times. But this is not to say that only people who live after them have the right to judge whether their values are great, their contemporaries have this righ and ability of judgment as well as their descendants. I have to admit there are indeed many great people who suffered from undesired poverty and depression because their contemporaries can not discriminate them from common ones. Copernicus and Bruno, all gained their reputation hundreds of years ago after their deaths, although their theories about the cosmic are wrong, however, the spirits of truth and the courage to challenge conventions are precious fortune to us. The same happened to a lot of artists too, take Van Gogh for instance, each of his painting is invaluable and could be sold at a very high price for millions of dollars today, however this genius painter only sold one painting when he was alive and finally he suicided in dejection. In the field of politics, especially in the history of China, there are lots of open-minded politicians whose ideas and policies exceeded times, but they were imprisoned or expelled because from the emperor to the common people, almost no one can understand the pith of their thinking. These tragedies happened and happened again in history. With the limitation of people's knowledge and experience, sometimes great people have to suffer undeserved treatment. Of course there are many great people who enjoy their reputation given by their contemporaries, because their contributions not only influenced the society or some specific field at their times, but also can influence their descendants in the future. However, that is not to say that only when the time people understand can they offer the right reputation to the great people. With our knowledge and experience advanced, we become more and more equitable and reasonable to treat their contributions, even we may not understand them at all. Think about those famous theories in science, when Einstein's theory of relativity came out, it is said that during a very long period of time, only several physicians can understand it, but that did not impede Einstein to be recognized as the most important scientist at his time. And the same is true of Plank who discovered quantum theory, of Schrödinger who concluded a profound equation that almost no one understand but became an important hypothesis even used today, and so forth. Also, Picasso, whose works are far transcend reality, is recognized as the most famous artist of our times although maybe it is difficult for you and me to understand his works. People are becoming more and more open-minded than before, or at least, they can use knowledge and experience to "predict" whether other people's contributions are great or not. This is a good thing, because we do not have to leave those great people lonely until their greatness can only be decided by those who live after them--it will be a pity because they have already died for many years. We may still neglect some great people, after all, we are making our best to recognize them. There will be more and more people do not have to wait because we can give them the proper judgment to their contributions now. ARGUMENT117 - The following is a memo from the business manager of Valu-Mart stores. "Over 70 percent of the respondents to a recent survey reported that they are required to take more work home with them from the workplace than they were in the past. Since Valu-Mart has not seen impressive sales in its office-supply departments in the past, we should take advantage of this work-at-home trend by increasing at all Valu-Mart stores the stock of home office machines such as printers, small copy machines, paper shredders, and fax machines. We will also increase stock of office supplies such as paper, pens, and staplers. With these changes, our office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of our stores." In this memo, the manager advised all the market to increase the stock of home office machines and office supplies. He believed with these changes, the office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of Valu-Mart stores. To substantiate his conclusion, he just cited a survey which shows that people are becoming more and more work at home. However, after carefully scrutinize this argument, we can find it unconvincing for several critical flaws. First of all, the survey, which is the basis of this argument, is not reliable at all. The author neither mentions the details of this survey and how it is conducted, nor does it indicate which kind of people and how many of them responded to the survey. "Over 70 percent of the respondents" is too vague to be meaningful. Common sense tells us that not all works are suitable to be done at home. Can a worker produce products at home? Can a manager negotiate with his clients at home? Only a limited kinds of work can be taken to home. Maybe some secretaries who handle with their documents at home complain to the survey, but they are not representative enough to reflect the general situation. Since it is impossible to access the validity of the survey, the author can not come to the conclusion that there will be a work-at-home trend. What's more, even there do exist such a trend, there is no evidence that these people who take work home are consumers of Valu-Mart or they will buy home office machines or office supplies at all. We all know that such machines, as printers, paper shredders, fax machines and so on are very expensive, people may not have the ability to afford them. At least, the author offers no evidence show that they want to buy these machines; the same is true of office supplies such as paper, pens and staplers, although they are much cheaper. Since people are doing work which they take from workplace, the boss of them may agree them to bring some necessary office supplies from their work-place, thus they do not have to buy them. As refer to those expensive machines, they can handle such work the second day at their work-places. Finally, the author concludes that the office-supply departments will become the most profitable component of the Valu-Mart stores. Even if people will buy office-machines and office supplies as the increasing of work-at-home trend at Valu-Mart stores, there is no evidence that this department will gain the most profits of the stores. We all know that there are lots of departments of the stores, food, electrical equipment, cloth and so on; the author should offer detailed information about situations of other departments of the Valu-Mart stores. Otherwise, the conclusion that the office-supply departments will become the most profitable component is totally untenable. In conclusion, this is no where more ridiculous to conclude that whether a department will become the most profitable one merely due to a vague survey. To convince us, the author should offer more information about the survey to prove that the more and more consumers of the Valu-Mart stores are doing work at home and they will buy such home office machines or office supplies. Furthermore, the author needs to provide us with more detailed information of other departments of the stores either. |
