ISSUE41 - "Such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits play a vital role in society by satisfying human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science." Á¢³¡ÊÇ×ÜÌåÉÏ·´¶Ô 1´Ó¹Åµ½½ñ˵Ã÷·ÇÖ÷Á÷¿Æѧ²»ÄܳÉΪÉç»áµÄ¹Ø¼ü 2¼´Ê±·ÇÖ÷Á÷¿ÆѧÂú×ãÈËÀàÐèÒª£¬µ«ÈÔÈ»ÄѳÉÉç»á¹Ø¼ü 3Èò½£¬·ÇÖ÷Á÷¿Æѧ¸øÈËÀà´øÀ´Ó°Ïì 4×ܽᣬÉç»áµÄÖ÷Á÷»¹ÊÇ¿Æѧ£¬·ÇÖ÷Á÷µÄÖ»ÄÜ¿¿±ßÕ¾ The author of this statement contends that such nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits satisfy the human needs, thus, they play a vital role in society. As our society is becoming more and more leaning on science, I can not agree with the author's viewpoint as a whole, even if those nonmainstream areas have great influence on our society somewhat. Hundreds of years ago, when our society is dominated by those nonmainstream areas, the public's mind is largely chained by astrology, fortune-telling and so on. At that time, a lot of enlightened people, such as Alster, began to trust the truth of everything-science. They tended to find all relationships of everything between the result and cause. According to the finding of Alster, the sun was not rotating around the earth, whereas it was firmly objected by those who sticked to astrology, and so on. From the time people began to trust science, more and more began to disbelieve those areas such as astrology, and so on. It explains why those areas are now called-"nonmainstream "areas. In our modern society, a lot of scientists are aimed at clearing the public's misunderstanding toward some mystery events. Take the famous crazed cult-"Falun Gong" for example, its essence is to deceives the public, incite the public to hurt themselves, and do harm to the society. All of its tricks is revealed by the scientists and is finally banned by the government. Even if the "Falun Gong" have a great impact on the public for a long time, it can not bear the scrutiny of science and will finally disappear due to its harmful essence. Obviously, these nonmainstream areas can not play a vital role in our society. Further more, even if those nonmainstream areas do satisfy human needs, they can not play a vital role in satisfying our needs. Our society is powered by the science and technology. What you rely on most is science but not those nonmainstream areas. Our destiny is in our own hands, not in the fortune-teller's hands; the weather report is more accurate than the astrology; we can not survive without the modern utilities such as electricity, and so on. What those nomainstream give us most is just illusions. Granted, there are some cases when those nonmainstream areas do satisfy our needs and are very important in our life. Suppose, if you want to win the first prize in a lottery, how can you do? Just to turn to the fortune-teller for help? Once a friend of mine, who often tends to ask for the fortune-teller before he buys the lottery, spent all his money in the lottery and gained nothing in return, even he accepted a famous fortune-teller's advice. Finally my friends said: ¡°what the fortune-tellers do is to make feel sure for the success¡±. It is the same when we hope to be "lucky", as most of the Chinese people believe the "dies Faustus"(dies Faustus means lucky days). When we make wedding ceremony, people tend to choose the dates on the "dies Faustus", even if everyone thinks there is no difference between each day. To sum up, our society is mainly determined by the mainstream areas, such as science. Even if those nonmainstreams areas satisfy our needs in some aspect, the society still will emphasis more and more on the importance of mainstream areas.
