Issue 207 Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are. Rituals and ceremonies are handled down from generations to generations as time passes by and used to celebrate or commemorate. The spirits and meanings of rituals and ceremonies are preserved deeply in culture, thus make people to define themselves by rituals and ceremonies to some extant. As refer to the profound proposition of self-sense and the philosophic problem of “who am I”, however, rituals and ceremonies are not the only answer. When we cast a look back at the evolution of rituals and ceremonies, we can see clearly that they play a paramount role in our society—not only thousands of year ago when tribes prayed for blessing of their hunting, but also at modern today society or groups of people celebrate festivals—rituals and ceremonies always help define a culture by various actions and thus express people’s emotion or display a period of history, a kind of faith or some specific moral value and so on. It is through these rituals and ceremonies that people know their ancestors, the ever past, provenance of their customs and value systems. These were deep in one’s heart when he/she is still a child and will accompany his/her whole life, and help them to find a kind of society attachment. Yet with the rapid development of science and technology today, rituals and ceremonies are gradually being mended or some of them might disappear one day. When ancient people lived on hunting, rituals and ceremonies were used to show their respect to their own god according to their religion to pray for hunter’s safe; as time passed by, more and more people began to live on agriculture, the began to pray for favorable weather for the crops by some unique ritual; then with urbanization today, people gain their personal success by their own capability and knowledge, so here comes the question that how about the result of those rituals and ceremonies? Some of them do disappear because people’s perspective of the world or even of the cosmic improve so much. But there is no need to cry for fear of the diminishment of human being’s “self-sense”, and the answer to the philosophic question about “who am I” will be answered by other aspects of culture, because culture is multidimensional and there are other forms that can help define it rather than rituals and ceremonies, such as songs and dramas, languages and crafts and so on. The folklores and anecdotes tell people about their forebears’ stories, even some of which might be true; and due to the advanced technology, it is easy to know one society or one group’s history by books, internets or something else; the language people use can define a culture in a subconscious perception etc. These entire mean that without rituals and ceremonies, people possess other methods to orient themselves all the same. Rituals and ceremonies do help a lot in defining a culture. If a society or a group of people want to dig out the sense of who they are from culture, they do not to only rely on rituals and ceremonies, since there are so many aspects of culture, people have many ways to define themselves in the world. |

When we cast a look back at the evolution of rituals and ceremonies, we can see clearly that they play (回顾,时态不应该沿用一般现在时)a paramount role in our society—not only thousands of year ago when tribes prayed for blessing of their hunting, but also at(前面用in比较恰当) modern today society or groups of people celebrate festivals(这里用or表示的前后不相称)—rituals and ceremonies always help define a culture by various actions and thus express people’s emotion or display a period of history, a kind of faith or some specific moral value and so on. It is through these rituals and ceremonies that people know their ancestors, the ever past, provenance of their customs and value systems. These were deep in one’s heart when he/she is still a child and will accompany his/her whole life, and help them(注意单复数前后一致) to find a kind of society attachment. Yet with the rapid development of science and technology today, rituals and ceremonies are gradually being mended or(用and是否更好些) some of them might disappear one day. When ancient people lived on hunting ,rituals and ceremonies were used to show their respect to their own god according to their religion to pray for hunter’s safe; as time passed by, more and more people began to live on agriculture, the began to pray for favorable weather for the crops by some unique ritual; then with urbanization today, people gain their personal success by their own capability and knowledge, so here comes the question that how about the result of those rituals and ceremonies? Some of them do disappear because people’s perspective of the world or even of the cosmic improve(perspective 没有复数这里就应该用单三表示)so much.
