TOPIC: ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."

When looking back to the human history, we always put our eyes on the brilliant figures of a number of heroes while ignored the contribution of the group people whose identities didn't been recorded in books. In fact, the most significant events and the trend of the progress of society are forced forward by the masses more than the few famous.

To begin with, of course, I have to concede the of great significance effect of the leaders or heroes, who are known well by modern people. Take the instance of the American Civil War for instance, the former president Abraham Lincoln, who sacrificed his life for the advance of the democracy of  the United States at last and is honored by the latter generations, played inevitable role in the victory of the war as a leader of the North, and then guaranteed the lasting prosperity of the nation. In this meaning, the role and contribution of the few famous are emphasized by us.

Whereas, the study of history shouldn't places too much praise to the few individuals for two respects of causes as discussed below. In one thing, almost all the great accomplishment in the scope of  the globe(无l) are conducted and finished by the masses who are the numerous common person. We need to look no further than ancient achievement of human being for supporting examples, from the Great Wall as the mode of the fruit of the eastern old civilization, or the brilliant , the secret Pyramid in Africa, to the brilliant Buildings of Rome.

Furthermore, all the contributions of the few leaders or famous in past are attained in the context of the huge history trend, in other words, they are the certain outcome of the development of society rather than the few elites' willing. And without the advocation of the inmumrable civilians, no accomplishment would be gained, let alone the effect the few leaders. Coming back to the example of Abraham Lincoln, if there was no the emergency of the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, there would be no the development of the capital economy in the north states in the United States, therefore no demand for labors would existed, which is one of the most key factor for the Civil War, so the greatness of Abraham Lincoln will never been remebered by us.

Another case as opposed to the example of Lincoln is the tragedy of Li Hongzhang, whose status in Qing Dynasty of ancient China is comparative with the premier in present government. In a number of history researchers’ eyes, he is regarded as the first criminal who should be condemned for the comedown of China during the 19th century. However, the ultimate cause for the decline of the dynasty lies in the certain historical trend that Feudalization had lost its advanced advantage in the era with the social condition as background and the corruption of the Dynasty. The researchers with profound cognition shouldn’t overstate the responsibility of any individual including Li Hongzhang.

Besides, the negative influence  and effect on society brought about a series  overemphasis on individuals , such as personal worship, should be prevented cautiously. So many examples in history insist on this point. For example, the China Mao,  who guided Chinese to establish the new Republic of China, was praised as a god in China in the latter years of his life then what he said, no matter what the content was, was thought to be right. This personal worship is one of the direct reasons for the Culture Evolution in China in 1966-1976. Yet the political movement set by Chair Mao himself brought heavy loss to the nation. Likewise, another apt example is the former president of Soviet Union Stalin, although when reviewing the process of the new government in his political era , the emphasis on his role to the development of the country in the realm of history can’t be more large, he was condemned by the replacer, who left all the mistakes in history to the responsibility of Stalin, which is also an unscientific cognition in studying history.

In closing, given the evidences and examples described above, I reach the conclusion the research of history should never focus more on individuals than the numerous common persons.
