本来是要传pdf附件的 可是我的等级不够 所以就改成文本了 大家凑和着看吧 我去听了讲座 还是很有收获的 与大家分享 下面是课件的内容 How to Publish Papers in International Journals Peter B. Luh and Xiaohong Guan University of Connecticut and Tsinghua University Important? Difficult? .Is it important to publish papers in international journals? –Particularly EI and SCI indexed journals .Is it easy to publish such papers? –No. Particularly in those with reasonable impact factors (> 1) –Interactions among authors, members of the editorial board, and reviewers Why is it difficult? .Acceptance rate –Generally low ~ 25% or below .Review time –Tends to be long ~ plus minus a year .Picky reviewers and biased AEs and Editors –Well, what happened when you were a reviewer/AE? .Difficult to evaluate the significance of our own research or to present the work convincingly What is good research? .A good paper always builds on good research .What is good research? (Looking from the 3rdperson) –Addressing an important issue –No body had ever been able to solve it that well before –Now he/she did it. How could he/she do it? –Oh, I see. How come I didn’t think about this problem before or look at the problem from that perspective? That is clever and great! Toooobad. Sign!!! What is a good paper? .(Back to the first person) We have to honestly understand our truecontributions, their significance, and their relationship with respect toexisting results .Properly present in an intuitive, logical, rigorous, and exciting manner .How? .What is the problemunder consideration? .Why is the problem important? .Why is the problem difficult? .What is the magic touch? .What are the results and insights? .Versus: What I did first, second, then, then, .. –Who cares? .Key contributions should be well motivated with ideas intuitively explained and then rigorously presented .Supporting materials should be briefly and intuitively presented while referring to references .Length of a subsection should be more or less proportional to its contributions Contents of the talk .Introduction .Difficulties for Chinese scholars .Main contents of a paper .From submission to publication .New world of publication .Summary Difficulties for Chinese scholars? .Some papers of Chinese authors are rejected because of poor writing. Rejections justifiable? .“The paper was poorly written. There are many spelling and grammatical errors. I have to guess what the authors meant, and therefore it is difficult to evaluate the contributions of the paper.” Language .Direct translations may not work! –经济法≠Economic Law .Business Law –博士后流动站≠Post-doctor mobile station .Postdoctoral program –我抓紧时间完成≠I'll take my time to finish it .I will finish it as soon as possible Writing advice for non-native speakers? .Understand and use the right word, tense and singular/plural; avoid personal, … .Be careful about “which,”“that,”“it,”… .Avoid very long sentences until a later time .Use standard terms and symbols: z = qy? –f = ma ~ Much better! .Use tools for spelling, grammar, thesaurus, .. Writing advice for non-native speakers? .Let the ideas flow from one sentence to the next, one paragraph to the next, etc. .Be consistency in everything: –Format: font, size, spacing, paragraph, etc –Equations: Don’t copy, paste, and enlarge/shrink –References: First vs. last names, vol., issue, etc. .Would 2nd year graduate students not working on the project understand/appreciate it? Learn the language and culture? .TV, video, radio, audio, classes, etc. .XinDong Fang (Beijing) or Mei-Jia(Taipei) .English Bible, the New International Version –Language in all aspects plus culture and much more .Anything else? .Practice, practice, and practice Main Contents of a Paper .Title –Best representation of the paper: contributions and unique features –Generally not a sentence .Abstract –Summary in a few hundred words in plan language without symbols –Very important to attract readers Introduction .Motivations and problem descriptions .Academic and/or industrial impact .Highlights of major contributions and key ideas behind .Organization of the paper (can be merged with the previous bullet) .Don’t hype the paper to be more topical Literature reviews .Show the state of art .Use the original, representative, and recent papers available to the general public .Give appropriate credit while avoiding offensive remarks .May affect the selection of reviewers .Do not cite too many “in-house”references Problem Descriptions/Formulation .Intuitive problem description .Key assumptions and justifications .Definitions of all symbols -better done in a Just-in-time manner .Mathematical equations, intuition first .New features? Key problem characteristics? Solution Methodology .Intuitive ideas to solve the problem. Novelties? .Theorems, proofs, and derivations, emphasizing the new features and novelties .Performance or complexity analysis .Insights .Let the contributions stand out in an intuitive, exciting, and convincing manner!!! Results and Insights .Description of the test problem, data, and the computer system used .Intuitively and clearly present results and insights, especially illustrate the magic touches .Robustness of the testing: Random data sets plus Monte Carlo simulation .Comparison: Implementing a competing method without calibration is not convincing .Conclusion: Same as the abstract? –Has two parts .Summaryof findings: not a repeat of abstract .Concluding remarks: Failures, future directions, word of wisdom, etc. .Acknowledgment –Acknowledge the funding agencies –Thank individuals References .Have adequate references as presented before –Every paper cited should be in the reference list –Every paper in the reference list should be cited .List references in appropriate format and with complete information A good way to start –A skeleton .What is the problem under consideration? .Why is the problem important? .Why is the problem difficult? –D1, D2, D3.What are the magic touches? –M1,M2,M3.What are the results and insights? –R1, R2, R3 General Guidelines .Structure and Clarity –Logical presentation –Language flow .Be professional and ethical –No plagiarism of others work as well as our own –Cite existing ideas, sentences, and paragraphsin “” –No double submissions! –Violations could result in severe penalties Contents of the talk .Introduction .Difficulties for Chinese scholars .Main contents of a paper .From submission to publication .New world of publication .Summary From submission to publication .Submit a paper .Peer review .Receive decision from the editor .Modify based on comments and then resubmit .Upon acceptance, submit the final package .Galley proof -Return promptly .A baby paper is born after months of labor – generally > 9, not counting research time! Reviewing Procedure? .Anonymous peer review system with 2 to 4 reviewers .Frank, brutal, sarcastic, or even occasionally wrong criticisms .Request for revision or rejection ≠personal attack, “losing face”or “discrimination” Advices in responding to reviewers? .Never argue with reviewers, AE, or editor –Our first goal →get paper published rather than making enemies .Examine carefully all the comments –Clarify/differentiate those must be fully addressed from those that are desirable to be addressed –Try to fully address the former and discuss the latter within your capability .Address in the paper each and every point raised by reviewers/AE/Editor .Prepare a separate file documenting point- by-point response to every one of the referee’s comments .If you must disagree with the reviewer on some points, do it professionally with no bitterness or sarcasm .Know when to give up a particular paper or when to submit to a next tier journal New world of publication? .Roles changing –Less hard copies and more online journals –More authors post their work on the Internet –Role of journals: Certification of quality –“Intel Inside,”“T-ASE Approved” .Multi-media publication –Video, audio, spreadsheets, programs, etc. .Conference vs. journal papers? Not settled yet New world of publication .Review/publication time is becoming shorter –Paperless processing –90-90 Policy: 90% of papers within 90 days –Page budget less important →Less wait for publication .Constructive reviewers and friendly Editors!? –Tailgate inspection separating good vs. bad papers –Working with authors for better papers at the end The myth of Impact Factor Using Impact Factor for 05 as an example (available summer 06) Normalized . Impact FactorNormalized . Immediacy Index 02 and earlier 04 05 03 No. of papers cited in 05 50% of the total citations No. of years . Cited Half-Life Valuable links .“ISI Web of Knowledge”for impact factors –http://portal.isiknowledge.com/portal.cgi/portal.cgi?DestApp=JCR&Func=Frame&Init=Yes&SID=B1iBa3JMGnofh7FKAbD .Google “Scholar”for papers by an author .IEEE papers: http://www.ieee.org/ieeexplore .“Useful Information for Scholars New to the World of Science”for details or other topics Summary .Writing good papers is important for Chinese scholars to play a role in world arena .Understanding the language, cultural, and professional practice is crucial .You want to publish papers in good journals, and journals want good papers –Trust me! .Practice is the only way. Try it! .Scientific methods and technologies that improve efficiency, productivity, quality, and reliability Talking Alarm Clock! The Workplace at Infosys in Bangalore India.
