TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people." TOPIC: 1. a society's ideas and values is a synthetic concept by mixing various people or groups. 2. same appearance and behavior of people would not share same ideas and values in different society. 3. a society's ideas also should do research with a historical view. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Admittedly, you can tell about people's attitudes and interests through the way people look, dress, and act. But you will fail to analyze a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people in my opinion. In the first place, a society's ideas and values is a synthetic concept by mixing various people or groups, while an individual is only with common interests and attitudes. In one given society, some people unite one special group with their unique ideas and values which can be reflected by their appearance and behavior, the others will unite a different group with dissimilar ideas and values to the former. You could not tell which one is current in contemporaneity. So you would be confused about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and hehavior of its people. For instance, Hippies in USA with unique appearance, hair style, behavior could reflect the young group's ideas and values which was freedom but rebellion against the current ideas and values of USA society in 1960's. Only through synthesis of both of them can you tell a real ideas and values in American society at that time. As a result, we should consider a society’s ideas and values as a whole but not do them as a part in order to get an authentic . On the other hand, there is the same appearance and behavior of the people in different society. A solid example is that the people in jeans in different countries might not share the same ideas and values of their own society. In China, it was a unique character that the young people with jeans shows their fashionable and distinguished manners against the adult's conservativeness in 1980's. At the same time, wearing jeans just means a leisure life style in USA. Furthermore, the people living in different society with the same ideas and values, might be various appearance and behavior. For example, the people in UK share the same society's ideas and values with the people in USA since they have a close relationship in history, but they have different taste in dress, food or game. The English like the formal style in dress while the American like the leisure style. American football is totally different to the soccer in UK. So we could easily comprehend different appearance and behavior of between the English and the American while they own the same society’s ideas and values derived from the same ancestor. Last but not the least, a society's ideas and values were cumulated with lots of factors in a long term. Basic ideas and values in a special society could not easily change, but the appearance and behavior of its people is always unsettled in different periods or situations. Hippies were replaced by Yuppies. But chasing freedom and creativity is still the part of basic ideas and values in USA. Brush pen was replaced by pen. However, chasing beauty and artistry of handwriting is still basic attitudes to culture in China. In nother words, a society's real ideas and values hide in its history and its people. If we regard one special part while ignore the other, we will inevitably fail to achieve the real ideas and values of a society. In conclusion, if you want to find more details about a society's ideas and values, you should make a synthetic analysis through observing the appearance and behavior of the people, connecting all parts in a society with pantoscopic reseach, and exploring every facts in a society with historical view. |
