Shanghai is well known as the most prosperous and populous city in China. It is teeming with impressive tall buildings and great mansions. But besides these architectural marvels, there are also many historical attractions that record the glorious past of the city, such as temples.

Chenghuang Temple
Located on Yicheng Road, Huangpu district in Shanghai, Chenghuang Temple, or the City God Temple, is one of the key historical sites in Shanghai. It was originally built during the Yongle reign (1403-1424) of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It welcomed its most prosperous period in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
Chenghuang Temple is a Taoist temple. Covering an area of more than 10,000 square meters, it is made up of many halls and two gardens. Today, it is an important venue for religious activities in Shanghai and for international cultural exchange.

Jade Buddha Temple
Originally built in 1882 in Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), Jade Buddha Temple is an important Buddhist temple in Shanghai and is well known in China. The temple was once destroyed in the late Qing Dynasty and the new temple was built after the liberation of Shanghai.
The Jade Buddha Temple is famous for the two Buddhas made of jade. They were brought by monk Huigen from Burma. They are not only precious cultural relics but also rare porcelain artworks.
The Jade Buddha Temple is listed as one of the ten scenic spots in Shanghai and also regarded as a Pure Land in the busy downtown area.
Chinese name: Yu Fo Si (玉佛寺)

Longhua Temple
Located in Longhua town in the southern suburb of Shanghai, Longhua Temple is the oldest and largest temple in the city. It is said that the temple was originally built in the Three Kingdom Period (220–280) and built by Sun Quan, the King of Wu State, for his mother. The present temple was rebuilt in the Guangxu reign (1875-1908) in Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).
Today the temple has become a religious scenic spot combining the temple, the pagoda, the evening bell chiming and the temple fair. Visitors can find many Buddhist scriptures, statues and gold seals from the Tang (618-907), Song (960–1279), Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasties in the temple.

Jing'an Temple
Located at West Nanjing Road, Jing'an district, Jing'an Temple is one of the famous temples in the city. The history can be traced back to the Wu Kingdom during the Three Kingdoms Period. It was called Hudu Chongyuan Temple in that period. In the Southern Song Dynasty (1127–1279), it moved from the bank of the Wusong River to its present location. After surviving from several times' of destruction and renovation, it was rebuilt after 1984 and opened to the public in 1990.
Jing'an Temple is mainly composed of the Hall of Mahavira, the Hall of the Heavenly King and the Hall of the Three Saints. Due to its quiet and peaceful environment, it is praised as the Holy Land in the busy shopping center in Shanghai.

Baohua Temple
Located at the corner of Gaoping Road and Jiaocheng Road in Zhabei district, Baohua Temple is one of the important holy places for worshipping and holding Buddhist activities in Shanghai. Originally built in the Song Dynasty (960–1279), the temple has survived through hardships in history. After thorough renovation, it was officially reopened in 2003.
The construction of the temple complex follows the Song Dynasty style with high artistic values and careful design. Religious followers and visitors find it a nice place to meditate and relax.
