More Than 200 Medicines Are Now in Testing To Meet Needs of Children and Adolescents

***aceutical researchers are testing 234 medicines to meet the special health needs of children.These medicines offer hope that the significant improvements achieved in children’s health over the past few decades will continue and even accelerate. The potential medicines are either in clinical trials or under
review by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). A child born today can expect to live 30 years longer than a child born a century ago, according to the National
Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). NCHS statistics also show that infant mortality has sunk to record lows. New vaccines protect children against many childhood diseases, including polio, measles, mumps, chicken pox,diphtheria, whooping cough, hepatitis B, and meningitis.Antibiotics prevent deaths from pneumonia, scarlet fever and other diseases that used to claim the lives of chil-
dren. According to a New England Journal of Medicine report, pneumonia deaths among children dropped 97 percent between 1939 and 1996. According to the American Cancer Society, because of major treatment advances, 80 percent of children diagnosed with cancer last year will survive 5 years or longer, compared to less than 50 percent 30 years ago. ***aceutical research companies are working to continue this progress and to meet new challenges to children’s health, such as heart disease and obesity.
