【Share】Girls should marry at 16 says Iranian president

Following a rise in the legal minimum age for girls to marry in Iran from nine to 15 in 2004, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad suggested the best age is between 16 and 18 to improve his popularity. "The best age for marriage is between 16 to 18 for girls and 19 to 21 for boys,” Ahmadinejad said. Analysts saw the move as a deliberate ploy to attract support from young people, many of whom are concerned about being made to marry at an early age. "We have a parliamentary election in 2012 and hardliners want to win young people's votes in order to win the assembly vote," said an Iranian political analyst who asked not to be named. The authorities have been encouraging marriage as a way to fight what they call the "spread of immorality among youth".  |
