What effect has surveillance technology had on our relations
In today¡¯s corporate world more and more problems concerning ethical behaviors have come up to the surface. We have seen examples of unethical behavior through different corporate crisis with Enron or WorldCom, which have enlightened the mass public, employers and employees about what can be happening within a company such as employee¡¯s theft, corporate espionage, etc.

Surveillance technology answers the problem of employee theft, of employee effectiveness and performance.

Video cameras, hidden microphones, restricted access to the Internet and computer technologies are the means given to a company in order to ¡°look after¡± their employees.

However one should not underestimate the consequences of such installations.

Indeed, surveillance technologies can create a feeling of discomfort to employees and tensions between workers. But the most dangerous aspect that could be caused by surveillance is the bad work environment, which induces reduced performances.

Concerning the ever-controversial question of how much information should an employer have about their employees, it is always difficult to answer it, especially since asking too much detail about one¡¯s life can be misinterpreted as discrimination.

The second internship was the complete opposite. There was no surveillance. I went to work in the morning wondering if anyone was going to check on my work and give me feedback. However this never happened. This made me feel useless within the corporation, as if my work was unnecessary. This hindered my motivation and again my desire to go to work declined.

In the first case strong surveillance made me feel uncomfortable in my workplace. Wanting to do everything as fast as possible caused me to make some mistakes, for which I was reprimanded. This developed in me a feeling of never being good enough, which lowered my self-esteem. This feeling created a fear to go to work. It is then that you fall in a vicious circle.

I remember hearing an employer saying that happy employees were trustworthy employees, and it is my opinion that he was totally right in saying that.

I believe that too much surveillance can be as much dangerous as well as no surveillance at all. The ideal would be moderate surveillance, and technology is not
