【Share】The hard head who writes soft words ---Guo Jingming

Here is something about Guo Jingming. If you like him, then it will give you a good summary of him. By Qiu Chen It is hard to believe that Guo Jingming is one of the most successful writers in China. He is petite, fresh-faced and speaks with an elegant passion about his work. He sets a high standard for himself and his writing which is why he remains, at 27 years, so fresh-faced. When Guo cleans his face there are 10 separate stages involved and often eight different lotions to be applied. When he appears on television or is to be photographed he wears makeup. A perfectionist in his writing and career, he is also a perfectionist with his image. There is a fastidiousness about nearly every aspect of his life but that is not without its rewards. According to Open Book, which compiles retail statistics for books in China, Guo's books have topped the fiction best seller lists seven times since he came to fame 10 years ago. His first major book, City Of Fantasy, invented a new frozen world far away where the inhabitants lived lives over thousands of years and two brothers struggled with their destinies. His latest book, Critical, returns to a fantasy setting with a war between aristocratic families. It appears Guo was driven from the very start. Born in the southwestern city of Zigong to an engineer father and a bank clerk mother who encouraged him to write and be independent, in 2001 he flew to Shanghai to participate in a national essay contest for young writers - in China it is rare for teenagers to travel long distances unaccompanied. National fame The New Concept contest puts young authors and their works in the spotlight. Guo, who won the contest twice, shot to national fame in 2002 with a short version of City Of Fantasy which was published in the popular youth Mengya magazine. "It was a good time for us in those days when it was easy for young authors to attract national media attention," Guo said. "Before that, there was basically no so-called 'youth literature' and nowadays there are so many copycats that it is hard to distinguish yourself." Guo took the chance in a million he was offered. He was commissioned by a publisher and, working day and night, wrote the full version of City Of Fantasy within a month, even though he was studying in college. Soon after it hit the book stores, City Of Fantasy became the third best-selling novel in 2003, selling more than 1.5 million copies. In 2004, Guo established a collective and, as chief editor, produced the I5land series of books. Two years later, with a lot more experience, he founded his own publishing company Castor, which later became a part of the Shanghai company ZUI. In 2007, he published the literary monthly ZUI Novel which he used as a platform to find and promote new authors. To date the company has signed up about 100 authors, and the sales of their books average 200,000. According to Open Book, in September, eight of the top 10 best-selling young fiction books belonged to ZUI. In October, Guo succeeded in breaking through in another field - this time in comic books, a market ignored by most Chinese publishers. After giving 19 months of free copies of ZUI Comic with his ZUI Novel, he issued his first commercial run and within three days he had sold 300,000 copies. "I am a prudent adventurer," Guo said. "I see no ceiling for my business." Though Guo is famous for the sentiment in his fiction, he is hard-headed in business. "I enjoy challenging myself to do things others do not dare," Guo said. "But I never make rush decisions. Everything I do there is a result of long and detailed research and preparation. My success, to some extent, is ensured." "Being an author means that my name will probably go down in history. But I want more in my life. I want to dress well, live well and have a company that I can leave to my sons and grandsons. Winning in business gives me a ferocious thrill, which I think no man can resist." Since 2004, Guo has been on Forbes Chinese Celebrities List, which is usually dominated by actors and singers. Last year, he was one of two authors on the list, with an annual income of 2.39 million yuan ($357,293). But wealth does not come without a cost. "My life is like a non-stop spinning top," Guo said. "Guo is a workaholic," said Ye Ting, Guo's assistant. "Every day he works more than 12 hours and does not go to sleep until 4 am." Little private life "I have little private life. My life is all about work. The only friends I have are the two vice presidents in my company," Guo said. Guo said he never has personal relationships with anyone in his company. He learned this lesson in 2007 when four of his best friends, who were also editors, resigned to set up a magazine. Last month, after their venture failed, they asked to come back and Guo accepted them without hesitation. "As long as they can contribute to the company and we reach an agreement on pay, it is fine. My personal feeling towards them are nothing compared to the interests of the company," Guo said. Guo said he likes Shanghai, a city he thinks shares a characteristic with him - realism. "For me, Beijing is a city wrapped in a veil of dreams, young boys and girls living in basements, dreaming to be recognized one day and becoming singers and actors. Shanghai is more down-to-earth; people have realistic goals here." Yet the books he regards as his most representative works, Tiny Times 1.0 and Tiny Times 2.0, which are set in Shanghai, have been criticized for encouraging materialistic values in young people. The theme is betrayal of love for money and the narrative is sprinkled with mentions of Louis Vuitton, Dior and Gucci. Guo thinks he is just reflecting reality. "Shanghai is a cold city that worships big brands. People show more respect if you are carrying an LV bag." He is a fan of luxury brands himself, and has often been reported wearing Gucci from tip to toe. He is not interested in guiding or influencing his readers which is a traditional responsibility for a writer. "I am too young to tell people how to lead their lives. There is no way to judge whether a value the author promotes is right or wrong," Guo said. I had read his books in high school. I like him very much , i am even crazy ablout him, I dreamed of him at that time. I don't know how did he find the inspiration to write novel. I was green with envy at his achievement , he made lots of money  and he can live by himself. But now I have no feeling to him. I know everyone has his own lifestyle ,me too.  I don't need to envy him.one more thing, none of his later books can compete with his eary ones. |

oh,he is absolutely a marvelous celebrity,though i have not too much acquaintance with him. by the way,in modern time,money worship phenomenon has been surviving everywhere,and everybody struggle for house,for car,for woman.we could not reproach it,this is a practical issue. whatever to say,money is the hard truth. all of us should make endeavor to create our wealth like GUO JING MING! |
