Author Guidelines

Scope

Biotechnology Progress , an official, bimonthly publication of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and its technological community, the Society for Biological Engineering, features peer-reviewed research articles, reviews, and descriptions of emerging techniques for the development and design of new processes, products, and devices for the biotechnology, biopharmaceutical and bioprocess industries.

Topical areas of interest include application of biological and engineering principles in fields such as applied cellular physiology and metabolic engineering, biocatalysis and bioreactor design, bioseparations and downstream processing, cell culture and tissue engineering, biosensors and process control, bioinformatics and systems biology, biomaterials and artificial organs, stem cell biology and genetics, and plant biology and food science. Manuscripts concerning the design of related processes, products, or devices are also encouraged. Four types of manuscripts are published in Biotechnology Progress: Research articles, Topical or Review Papers, Letters to the Editor, and R&D Notes. Papers will be accepted for review only if they are not under consideration by another journal.

All authors should read the AIChE Code of Ethics . (Revised January 17, 2003)

Types of Manuscripts

Research Articles are full-length expositions of extensive and significant experimental or theoretical studies.

Topical or Review Papers are short reviews or full reviews focused on areas of interest to readers of the journal. They may also be state-of-the-art reports or commentaries. These papers are peer reviewed and are accepted on the basis of technical accuracy, importance, and readability.

R&D Notes are generally eight (or fewer) double-spaced typewritten pages including figures and tables.

Submission of Manuscripts

Submit your manuscript online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/biotechprog/.   If you are a first time user, follow the instructions for creating an author account under ¡°Create Account¡± (top right of the Login page).

Please submit your manuscript as a Word or rtf file (for text and tables) and tiff or eps (for figures). Other file types are not suitable for production. Please note that Manuscript Central does not accept a single file upload from the author. Text, tables, and figures will need to be uploaded individually. Do not embed figures or tables in the document.

LATeX Users: All files must be formatted in LaTeX version 2.02 or earlier. Figures must be formatted as either .tif or .eps files and saved separately. Directory structures should not be used when referencing external files. This will cause a corrupted upload into Manuscript Central and will result in the cancellation of manuscript submission. Class and style files may be either internal or external. Manuscript Central provides all standard LaTeX class files for author use; however, you may create your own. Please be sure to check the log file provided at submission to see if you are missing the class file from your document.

LaTeX File Submission Guidelines: Upload a PDF version of your manscript for review. Once a manuscript has been accepted for publication, Zip-up the directory containing all your LaTex files. This includes the TeX document, all graphics as separate files, any class files, any bibliography files, and the PDF of the final version. This zip file can be uploaded as a single file into Manuscript Central.

For technical assistance, please contact support@scholarone.com.

If you have any questions about the online submission process, you may also contact the Biotechnology Progress Editorial Office:

Manuscript Preparation

Cover Letter

A cover letter should accompany each submitted manuscript and must be uploaded on the Web submission site. The letter should provide the corresponding author¡¯s name, postal and e-mail addresses, and telephone and fax numbers.

The letter should address the significance of the manuscript and provide a list of 3-5 key words. Authors are also urged to provide the names and email addresses of recommended reviewers.

All editorial correspondence concerning receipt, status, review, revision, and publication of manuscripts will be sent only to one person who has been assigned as the ¡°corresponding author¡± during the evaluation period. The corresponding author is responsible for communicating the manuscript status to all coauthors of the paper.

Title. The title should accurately, clearly, and concisely reflect the emphasis and content of the paper. The title must be brief and grammatically correct.

Author List. Use first names, initials, and surnames. At least one author must be designated as the author to whom correspondence should be addressed and email information should be provided.

Address. The affiliation(s) listed should be the institution(s) where the work was conducted. If the present address of an author differs from that at which the work was done, the current address should be given in a footnote.

Abstract. All manuscripts must contain a short abstract (no more than 250 words), which should briefly state the reason for the work, the significant results, and the conclusions.

Text. The first paragraphs should explain what the motivation and import of the work are, where it fits in the development of the field, and perhaps why it should be of interest to researchers in other areas. It should be possible to do this without excessively increasing the length of the paper. Thoughtful use of schemes and diagrams (with concise and descriptive captions) is recommended, so that even casual browsers can discern the nature of the work. Well-known procedures should be designated by giving them name or literature references. Experimental results are of lasting value and should be clearly and logically presented in separate sections. The addition of a Conclusion section at the end of the paper, which briefly summarizes the principal findings of the work, is recommended. If desired for clarification, main section headings may be given Arabic numbers and subsections numbered in decimals (example, subsection 2.1 and subsection 2.2).

Acknowledgments. Dedications and notes acknowledging financial assistance, thesis work, or oral presentations at a scientific meeting or conference should be brief and placed in the Acknowledgment section.

Supplementary Material Statement. A brief statement, listing the contents of material placed in Supplementary Material, should be included at the end of the manuscript (after the Acknowledgment and before the References and Notes). For instructions on what material should be provided as supplementary material, see the Supplementary Material section below.

Figures. All figures must be mentioned in the text in consecutive order and be numbered with Arabic numerals. A caption giving the figure number and a brief description, preferably only one or two sentences must be included with each figure. The caption should be understandable without reference to the text.

Color Figure Preparation. For best reproduction, bright, clear colors should be used. Dark colors against a dark background do not reproduce well; please place your color images against a white background wherever possible.

Schemes. Schemes must have brief titles describing their contents and should be numbered with Arabic numerals

Charts. Charts must contain brief titles describing their contents and should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals.

Tables. Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. Each table must have a brief (one phrase) title that describes its contents. The title should be understandable without reference to the text. Details should be put in footnotes, not in the title. Tables should be used when the data cannot be presented clearly as narrative, when many precise numbers must be presented or when more meaningful interrelationships can be conveyed by the tabular format. Tables should supplement, not duplicate, information presented in the text and figures. Tables should be simple and concise. Footnotes in tables should be given letter designations and be cited in the table by italic superscript letters. The sequence of letters should proceed by row rather than by column. In setting up tables, authors should keep in mind the type area of the Biotechnology Progress page (17.8 - 25.0 cm) and the column width (8.5 cm) and should make tables conform to the limitations of these dimensions.

References and Notes

References and Notes should be formatted according to the AMA style, and must be listed numerically in the order they are cited in the text. Authors will need to provide complete information for each citation, as shown in typical examples below.

Provide a minimum of two and a maximum of five key words that best capture the concepts and scope of the work.

Graphics Preparation

All illustration files should be in TIFF or EPS formats. Do not submit native application formats.

Journal quality reproduction requires the following minimum resolution standards:

grey scale files            600 dpi to 1200 dpi

color files                     300dpi

Supplementary Material

Biotechnology Progress authors can publish supplementary material online in Wiley Online Library.   Supplementary material may include (but is not limited to) video clips, large sections of tabular data, program code, or electronic graphical files that are otherwise not suitable for print media.   Supplementary material must be included with the initial manuscript submission so that it is available for peer review.

Additional Reprint Purchases

Should you wish to purchase additional copies of your article, please follow the instructions provided at: https://caesar.sheridan.com/repr ... 10089&acro=BTPR

Copyright Transfer Agreement

No article can be published unless accompanied by a signed Copyright Transfer Agreement from the author(s). The Copyright Transfer Agreement is available by accessing the link at the top of this page.   The completed, signed, and dated form should be faxed to the Editor's office.
