【Share】Stereo type

I learned this word recently and wanna share some thoughts on it. What I concluded is: "Stereo type" is usually related the quick conceived image one accumulatively learned from other people, or some sort of information channel. Usually people connect it with "prejudice" but actully it is not prejudice always. Here is an interesting joke I learned from an old American lady, it is a vivid description of this word. Though the joke is slightly making fun of African-American and Chinese, it is not related with any kind of discrimination, it is just an example. Say if you think negroes steal and Chinese can not drive, and if you are stereo typed, you would start to believe once a neogro and a Chinese get married and have a kid, then this kid will start to steal someday. And one day he sucessfully steals a car, but he finds out he could not drive it away because he does not know how to drive. Of course this joke is over-exaggerated,  but that is the way to explain what stereo type is. Well, that is it, honestly, stereo type does exist in some people in our daily lives. I think it is kind of universal in human beings. In fact, we make too many judgement to person based on feeling, intuition and even assumption which come from ourself's living experience or the indirect experience of other people. Unfortunately, it may induce prejudice just like the joke you mentioned. I think the professors seldom make such kind of mistake because they would like to think and analyze before draw any conclusions. |
