HMA rats
Animal experiments were approved and carried out under the supervision of the Danish National Agency for Protection of Experimental Animals.

Three germfree Sprague–Dawley rats, aged 8 weeks, were used. Rats were bred at the National Food Institute from parental animals originally obtained from Taconic. Animals were dosed orally with 1 mL of human faecal suspension, kept in isolators as described previously (Schlundt et al., 1994), and fed with -irradiated Altromin 1314 (Brogaarden, Denmark). Samples were taken by provoked defaecation 2 weeks after dosage with human microbiota and maintained at ?20 °C until use.
