Present-day main applications of synthetic zeolites include the use as cation exchangers in detergent formulations, as selective adsorbents in drying and separations, and as catalysts in oil refining and petrochemistry. In the latter areas by far the greatest use is in catalytic cracking, other important areas being hydrocracking, hydroisomerization and aromatics processing In a not too far future the methanol-to-lower-olefins (MTO) process may constitute another important application. Compared to the successful use of zeolites in hydrocarbon processing, their use in the synthesis of organic intermediates and fine chemicals is in a relatively early state of development. Two reasons for this are - many of the target organic systems to be synthesized are too bulky to be built in or to desorb from the zeolite pore systems - the average synthetic organic chemist is not sufficiently acquainted with zeolites, their handling and tuning and their potential, other than their use as drying agent.
