There are two possible ways to enhance the surface roughness of a coating. Firstly, by increasing the roughness of the substrate (e.g. by plasma treatment, as surface topography significantly affects film topography. This strategy usually demands either special equipment or complex process control and is certainly not appropriate for the protection of stone monuments. The second approach is to increase the surface roughness without affecting the substrate. In our previous work, silica nanoparticles were dispersed in solutions of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and commercial polyalkylsiloxane (Rhodorsil 224) and the suspensions were sprayed on glass surfaces giving them super-hydrophobic properties (water contact angle N150¡ã) |
