Love for generations

I forgot the exact time when I met her, the year, the dynasty and the then emperor, but I did remember it was in autumn. At that time, it was hot and wet and the leaves on the trees did not start to fall.

I forgot the exact appearance when I met her, the eyebrow, the eye, the lip, but I did remember her long hair. It was dark in the night, pale yellow in sunshine and colorful in my hand.

She entangled me with her long hair and asked me why I did not see her. I said I had been all the time seeing you but you didn’t know it.

She said I was lying as my eyes always looking outside and my eyeballs motionless. I told her I saw her without the help of eyes.

Indeed, I didn’t use my eyes to see you because I didn’t believe in my eyes. Every time when I saw you with my eyes, my eyes gave me different pictures of you.

Just like your hair color, it was elusive for me to tell its color. Just like your eyebrows, it was elusive for me to foresee when they would frown and when they would unfold. I only knew your hair would definitely glitter when in my hands and my lip prints could surely smooth your frowned eyebrows.

Her hands gently grope my lips and asked me why I didn’t say “I love her”. I told her I had been all the way saying “I love you” but you could not hear that. She said I was lying and my lips always kept closed.

I said I love you without the help of my lips.

Indeed, I loved you without the help of my lips. They were too clumsy to express. So, they could only be used for kissing.

The love was over complicated and my mind was over simplified. I did not know all the while what was love. I should have known that love was just a chemical equation in which you and I were put together, catalyzed by breezing autumn wind, promoted by fallen leaves and flowing river, stirred by rod of time, burned by lonely flame, and eventually transformed to colorful rainbow.

Hand in hand, she asked me why I didn’t age with her to the end of life. I said I had been with you for too long, generation after generation, but you didn’t remember that.

You cannot remember the war flame that was lit just for your smile. You cannot remember the galloping horse outside Changan city just carrying the lichee for you. You cannot remember the hair-raising indignation and the consequent side-changing of the war just for voicing grievance for you.

Life is just like the meteor scratching off against the sky but the memories keep eternal just because I didn’t drink up the forgetting soup in the sighing bridge.

Since I have accompanied you for generations, I don’t care too much about this single generation.
