Ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C4mim]Cl) was used as a dissolution medium and water as a extraction medium for extraction of Paeonol from dried root of Cynanchun paniculatum(Bye.)Kitag by microwave-assisted extraction. The conditions of MAE including the size of sample, solvent, ionic liquid/solid ratio, extraction power and time were optimized. Under appropriate MAE conditions, the extraction yield can reach high in a short time. The extraction yield by MAE was the same or even higher than conventional extraction methods. MAE only needs 8 min, but Soxhlet extraction extraction at room temperature, heat reflux extraction, ultrasonic extraction and need 24 h, 45 min, 75 min and 90 min, respectively.
