Surface plasmon polaritons are solutions of Maxwell’s equations in which the effects of retardation—the finiteness of the speed of light—are taken into account. An important subclass of surface plasmon polaritons are surface plasmons.These can be viewed as the limiting case of surface plasmon polaritons when the speed of light is allowed to become infinitely large. 所以SP是SPPs的理想近似 |

plasma （等离子体）是对外显电中性的正电离子和负电电子的集合 plasmon （等离子体激元）是plasma中电子相对正电背景做集体振荡的能量量子，类似于声子是晶格振动的能量量子，他与plasma的关系也相当于声子与晶格的关系，与声子一样都是一种元激发。 那么surface plasmon 应该叫表面等离子体激元。 而 surface plasmon polaritons 应该叫表面等离子体极化激元，它是指plasmon 受外界电磁波极化之后产生的另外一种元激发，但它的实质是外界电磁波与导体表面plasma耦合后传播，发散的电磁波。 而现在很多地方将surface plasmon polaritons 简化为surface plasmon |
