Burbank to Receive New Fuel Cell Bus.
The City of Burbank in California will be receiving the first fuel cell/plug-in hybrid bus from Colorado-based Proterra with funding via state grants.  The 35-foot-long bus will be put into service on city routes and can travel 250 miles before recharging, tripling the fuel economy of a diesel bus.

GENCO Purchases 25 Fuel Cell Units for Kimberly-Clark Forklifts.
GENCO Supply Chain Solutions has purchased 25 Plug Power GenDrive™ fuel cell power units for lift trucks at a Kimberly-Clark distribution center in Graniteville, South Carolina. The GenDrive units are expected to be received in the next two months.

Nuvera Receives DOE Awards.
Nuvera Fuel Cells has received two technical research awards, totaling $8.4 million from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to increase the durability and performance of fuel cell stacks designed to meet DOE’s 2015 cost and durability targets.  Both projects support Nuvera’s product development plans to reduce fuel cell capital and life cycle costs for both advanced automotive technology and next generation PowerEdge material handling products.

SFC Introduces CHP Fuel Cell System for Electric Vehicles.
SFC Smart Fuel Cells and ESG Elektroniksystem- und Logistik-GmbH have introduced a new innovative on-board combined heat and power (CHP) supply concept for electric vehicles.  The fuel cells automatically recharge the battery when required, while at the same time producing heat for battery conditioning and heating purposes.  In combination with modern battery management systems, surprisingly low nominal power is enough for the fuel cell to achieve a significant increase of range and vehicle performance.  SFC is also providing on-board power to almost 400 vehicles of the German Federal Office for Goods Transport.  The vehicles have been used successfully over several months now as mobile offices for road and toll control services with the fuel cell recharging the battery whenever needed, quietly and without emissions.

UTC Power’s Long Running Space Shuttle Program Ending.
UTC Power is scheduled to ship the last Space Shuttle Orbiter fuel cell power plant to United Space Alliance, NASA’s prime shuttle contractor.  Since 1966, each Space Shuttle Orbiter has had three fuel cells onboard that provide all of the shuttle’s electric power and drinking water for the astronauts. The fuel cells fly an average of five missions before being returned to South Windsor for maintenance and overhaul.  UTC Power’s fuel cells have spent more than 110,000 hours in space.

CPUC Authorizes Fuel Cell Installations.
The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has authorized Pacific Gas and Electric Company and Southern California Edison Company to install utility-owned fuel cells on several University of California and California State University campuses.  The CPUC approval includes the installation of four FuelCell Energy 1.4 megawatt (MW) fuel cell power plants and two 200-kW solid oxide fuel cell systems from Bloom Energy at various state universities in California.

IdaTech Receives Contract for Indonesian Telecommunications Installations.
IdaTech and its partner Cascadiant has been awarded the contract to install and support ElectraGen™ H2 fuel cell backup systems throughout the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The companies are working with Indonesian wireless operator PT Hutchison CP Telecommunications (HCPT).

UltraCell Launches 3-Up Battery Charger.
UltraCell Corporation has launched its 3-Up battery charging system for military devices and electronic equipment which combines the company’s existing reformed methanol fuel cell (RMFC) technology and award-winning extended runtime fuel tanks with a flexible nylon bundling system and an innovative power manager, called the Director.  The 3-Up, which has already shipped to the U.S. military, operates as an integrated soldier portable power generator and battery charger.

UPS Signs Partnership Agreement with BOC.
UPS Systems plc has signed a unique partnership agreement with BOC, a member of the Linde Group, to distribute, their new low cost Hymera 150w hydrogen fuel cell generator in the UK.  Powered by an ultra-compact lightweight 300 bar hydrogen cylinder, the Hymera 150w hydrogen fuel cell generator is suitable for a wide range of remote prime power applications including high efficiency lighting, instrumentation, security cameras, power tools and many other low power consumption products.
