Project Title: High-Temperature Interfacial Thermodynamics for Mechanism-Informed Materials Design: A Case Study of Sintered Mo-Si-B Based Alloys

A Short Summary:  Via the support of a highly-competitive Young Investigator Program (2007-2010), we demonstrated the existence and importance of liquid-like grain boundary (GB) structures in binary refractory metals.  Upon the successful completion of that Young Investigator project (a Ph.D. student who has completed that work received a Diamond Award of the Graduate Excellent in Materials Science (GEMS) Awards, which is the highest honor for graduate research given annually by The American Ceramic Society, Basic Science Division), we are awarded a new project as a continuation of that study. In this new project, we plan to use sintered Mo-Si-B based alloys as model systems to establish high-temperature interfacial thermodynamics for GBs in multicomponent alloys.  Mo-Si-B based alloys have great practical potential as the next generation high-temperature materials with important aerospace & energy related applications.  On the scientific side, we propose a long-range goal to develop “GB ‘phase’ diagrams” as a new materials science tool.  In our opinion, this can be a potentially transformative concept that may fundamentally change the philosophy and methodologies for controlling microstructures and designing optimal materials fabrication recipes.
