Reviewer #1: This paper dealt with the preparation and characterization of a new carboxymethyl chitin material synthesized from -chitin and the moisture absorption and retention ability of this material was investigated. Preparation of carboxymethyl chitin is not a new technology. The innovation of this paper is that the authors used-chitin instead of general -chitin to prepare this carboxymethyl chitin. So this paper has a scientific value to some extent. However, the comparison between the molecular structure and functional properties of the ordinary and-chitin derived carboxymethyl chitin should be made to see if the new one prepared here is better and why. The language and structure of this paper are acceptable generally except that some sentences should be revised according to the following suggestions. Therefore, this paper is acceptable for publication after complement and revision.

Line64,"a 40 g/100 g of aqueous NaOH solution of a specific amount" can be changed into " a specific amount of 40% (w/w) NaOH aqueous solution"
Line68, "by using a 20mL to 80 mL of mixed solution of 5 M of aqueous acetic acid solution to absolute alcohol." This sentence is quite difficult to understand. Does it mean " using 20-80 mL 5 M acetic acid in absolute alcohol"?
Line 85, please provide the type, producing place and country of the FT-IR spectrometer.
Line 198, in the sentence "CM-chitin with a high DS, a low DD, and a high molecular weight can be.", the three "a" can be deleted.
In the whole paper, please change ".by using." to "using."
In such sentences as " .g (or M etc.) of . solution", "of" can be deleted.
Try to avoid using numbers to start a sentence.
