There are more ways than one to succeed

A few more than two decades ago, a song entitled There are more ways than one to succeed catapulted the then pop singer 张行 to stardom. Although I was a high school student at that time, the sweet tone and simple lyrics of the song had made a long-lasting impression upon me. And even decades elapsed and I had transformed from an examinee to an examiner, this song still possessed the magic power of bringing me back to the spring of my life. Some touching verses of it read: “Southern wind blowing and roses getting red/ The entrance exam season comes back/Dad asks me to prepare/Pass it and make the glory shared”.
Now the song and its singer had been stored in the memories of our middle-aged while the profound implication of the song still holds water. Several months later, the grads from junior and senior high schools will have to take part in the long-awaited entrance exams, respectively. If tradition is anything to go by, the examinees are all ratcheted up and mugging up for their futures. Their teachers are doing their utmost to encourage the students to hold on in the multi-month countdown. And the parents are racking their brains to dish out brain-strengthening foods for their children in a bid to sharpen their wits for the upcoming tests. At such a critical time, however, I should remind our kind-hearted parents of relaxing their boys and girls. I mean, if you really care for your child’s future, just calm down and do something real. Many parents around do not seem to realize that pressure in the form of pep talks work to only a certain extent and for certain people. Adverse effects start to kick in beyond that. What is important for us parents to do includes: easing the mental burden of the students and helping them live a more regular while less jammed pre-exam life. Above all, the parents must convince their children: whether you can pass the exams or not, you are my dearest child. As the exam draws near, the parents must keep in mind that they are obliged to help their children get over the dark night of the soul and convince them when one door closes the other opens. Even if you flunk, I believe, if you can find a road fitting you while less traveled by other, you should be confident in making a difference to your life.
Let me end it with the saying from the above-mentioned song: If I failed in the exam, please do forgive me and free me from your blame. There are more ways than one to be successful.
