It was reported by the Chinese media portal sina.com that the domestic top-notch Fudan Universtiy has made a bold decision to accepted a 38-year-old pedicab driver, 蔡伟，as its literature doctorate candidate focused on ancient Chinese characters. As the report pointed out, a middle-aged doctorate student of 38 years old is not strange and rare, rather, is very common and easy to find in the campuses. But if蔡伟’s previous education backgrounds are taken into account, one will be extremely astonished and eager to know why. 蔡伟 only boasted a senior high school degree and was laid off ten years ago. Forced by the hard living condition, 蔡伟 once drove the pedicab to earn the living for him and his family. The guy albeit suffered harsh materials scarcity, he still insisted on studying the marvelous ancient Chinese characters thanks to the fact that this kind of soft science research does not need solid financial support, Instead, the persistence and love of the subject set the base for his academic achievement and the subsequent change of his future life. In this essay, I don’t want to talk about the strong willpower of蔡伟, nor the insight of his supervisor as well as the courage of the university’s administration. What I am interested in lies in the relationship between learning and interest.

What has been driving蔡伟 to delve into such a special subject? Fame or money? Definitely not. It is the strong love for the ancient Chinese characters that keeps him studying them. If it is not the interest in ancient Chinese literature, for what else can possess 蔡伟 in reading such “boring” and “hard” books for decades everyday after painstaking physical exertion? The joy and agony can only be tasted by蔡伟 himself just as such abstruse literatures can only be understood by蔡伟 and a few specialists like him. 蔡伟 did not need anyone else to push him like that: Don’t waste your time, just working hard on your lessons. 蔡伟 also did not look forward to anything like that: Money rewarded for his unswerving efforts or less physical labor due to his knowledge. The only pure and simple reason for him to persist in researching such konwledge is that he can have fun in doing so. He can temporarily get rid of the troublesome chores in his humble lifestyle. It is imaginable that for an ordinary worker living on part time job, he couldn’t have the travel chance on public expenses, nor could he have the opportunity to go to movie or entertain in the Karaoke frequently. Eschewing such a Vanity Fair, 蔡伟 chose to live a colorful spiritual life in his spare time by making friends with such ancient civilizations. Note that蔡伟 has achieved much in the ancient Chinese characters aspect mainly because he did such without the temptation of economic benefits. He did not need to plagiarize other’s so-called academic fruits or just invent some false achievements to apply for financial supports of many kinds. Ironically, it is exactly because he could not be financed by any channels he could do his research work with a calm and serious mind.

Let’s go back to the so-called mainstream academic institutions and universities. In today’s scientific research communities, it is often exposed that certain well-known professor plagiarized other’s results or certain doctor invents data to perfect his papers. Such academic corruptions are nurtured by the current scientific research and assessment policies which value the quantities of papers rather than their qualities. Maybe we can find some helpful enlightenment from this incident.
