Year One: This year’s coursework focuses on mild disabilities (mild mental handicaps and learning disabilities). In three courses (9 credits) we cover considerations for developing individualized and group instructional programs, such as curriculum design, classroom organization and effective teaching practices. We focus on adaptive and remedial techniques for teaching reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, the creative arts, study habits, critical life skills and other curriculum areas. Year Two: This year’s coursework (9 credits) focuses mainly on behavior disorders and emotional handicaps. We concentrate on approaches for teaching students who display problems in discipline and motivation, including methods of classroom management, behavior management and self-management instruction. Year Three: This year’s coursework (9 credits) considers broader issues of program development and teaching in rural settings. We address such topics as pre-vocational instruction and transition to work, community- based instruction, teaching students with multiple disabilities, and working with families and community agencies. We have students carry out most course activities and assignments on a collaborative basis to establish a professional dialogue about teaching content and methodology. Working in small local teams, students discuss the concepts presented in the class sessions, prepare lessons and interventions for the children in their classrooms, and problem solve issues and concerns they have about their school programs.
