| It is usually considered that the A-site cations are inert components in the perovskite compounds which play a role of stabilizing the perovskite structure instead of participating directly in the chemical reaction. The B-site cations occupying the center of the BO6 octahedra are active elements which have a major role in the photocatalytic reaction. The 2p orbitals of oxygen form the valence band. The 3d orbitals of Fe3+ split into unequal t2g and eg energy levels forming the conduction bands. The configuration of 3d electron of Fe3+ is t2g3eg2. When photocatalysts are irradiated by the lights having an energy equal or greater than that of the forbidden bandwidth, the electrons on the valence band are excited to the conduction band, resulting in photo-generated electrons and holes. Such electrons and holes combined with absorbed oxygens and H2O on the surface of the catalysts result in the highly active matters such as •O2 and •OH free radicals which generate redox reaction with dye. |
