Department of Physics Research Associate Ref: KA06189 Grade: Research Associate Salary: £27,319 - £35,646 pa Limit of Tenure: 18 months in the first instance Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate position in the Biological and Soft Systems sector of the Cavendish Laboratory, commencing early 2010. The project will be in the field of polymer self-assembly and nanocomposites, looking principally at the self-assembly of block copolymer matrices and the incorporation of metal nanoparticles. The project specifically looks at methods to optimize selective gas transport processes by altering the physico-chemical structure of membranes. The project, will partner with activities carried in Qatar University, where small and medium scale gas membrane separation units will be constructed and tested. The principle role of the person hired for this position will be to provide a fundamental science approach to developing these membranes. There will be the opportunity to collaborate with additional projects investigating other aspects of soft matter self-assembly. We seek a highly motivated candidate with a strong background in experimental polymer physics, as well as a demonstrated experience in the chemical synthesis of block copolymers and/or metal nanoparticles. The position will require a suitably strong grasp of polymer structural characterization, using scattering and/or microscopy methods (AFM, TEM).
