Determination of thiabendazole in orange juice and rind by liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection and confirmation by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry after extraction by matrix solid-phase dispersion. A method was developed for the determination of thiabendazole (TBZ) in orange juice and rind, based on matrix solid-phase dispersion. TBZ was extracted with ethyl acetate and the extract was subsequently cleaned up on a solid-phase extraction column. Fungicide residues were determined by LC with fluorescence detection. Recoveries ranged from 87 to 97%, with relative s.d. of 11%. Detection and quantitation limits were 0.15 and 0.50 mug/kg, respectively. Confirmation ofTBZ residues in positive samples was performed by solid-phase microextraction, followed by GC with MS detection using selected ion monitoring. The developed method was then applied to determine TBZ levels in commercial orange juices and in the juice and rind of fresh oranges. Effects of storage and washing of oranges were also investigated on TBZ residues. In fresh oranges, TBZ residues were mainly found in the rind, with only a small fraction appearing in the juice. Most of the commercialjuices presented residue levels below detection limits, and all levels detected were below the MRL set by the EU for TBZ in whole fruits.
