2. The reaction is the liquid-solid one. As the insoluble RE2(CO3)3 generates during the process of reaction and the products adhere to the non-reacted nucli, the model of non-reacted nucli with solid phase products can therefore be chosen to describe the reaction. Additionally, the variation of the total volume of the grains is associated with the density of the reactants and products and the stoichiometric coefficients. The density of RE2(SO4)3 and RE2(CO3)3 was measured to be 5.28 g/cm3 and 5.83 g/cm3, respectively. Based on the data, the corresponding ratio of the grain size before reaction to those after reaction can be calculated to be 0.90. It is seen that the variation of grain size is very small, so the whole variation of grain size can be neglected and taken as constant approximately. So, at last the model of contracted non-reacted nucli with constant grain size was adopted.

1. Experimental
The experiment was performed in the 2000 ml three-necked flask which was water-bath heated at constant temperature accompanied by stirring with an electric mixer. Heat the solution of NH4HCO3 and NH3•H2O into regulated temperature, then add the RE2(SO4)3. After the reaction completed, filter and rinse the solution. Then measure the concentration of RE2(CO3)3 and through it calculate the leaching rate of rare earth.
