Staff Instructor: Martin Fejer (Applied Physics) Ginzton 279 725-2160 fejer@stanford.edu Secretary: Vivian Drew Ginzton 281 723-0227 bfadmin@loki.stanford.edu Teaching Assistant: TBD Course Description EE231: Introduction to lasers and how they work, including quantum transitions in atoms, stimulated emission and amplification, rate equations, saturation, feedback, coherent optical oscillation, laser resonators, and optical beams. Limited primarily to steady-state behavior; uses semiclassical models for atomic transitions with little quantum mechanics background required. EE 232, taught in the winter quarter, contains a more advanced treatment of laser physics, with emphasis on dynamic, transient and nonlinear effects.
