The effects of element (Nb and Si) proportions on the microstructures of the synthesized composites were mainly investigated. The results show that element proportions strongly affect the microstructures of Nb/Nb5Si3 composites; Nb/Nb5Si3 in situ composites up to 99.59% of theoretical density were fabricated by SPS technology, and the microstructures of the fabricated composites comprise the synthesized Nb5Si3 and the uniformly distributed Nb particles. Moreover, with the increase in the Si content from 6% to 20% (atom fraction), the volume fraction of the synthesized Nb5Si3 in the composites increases, whereas the content and size of Nb particles decrease obviously. The higher shrinkage and densification for Si content (16 at.% and 20 at.%) close to the eutecticcomposition take place. The results show that the oxidation kinetics of each alloy was not changed whether at 1000 or 1200 degrees C, and the oxidation mechanism were not changed. The oxidation resistance of Nb/Nb5Si3 in situ composites was sensitive to Si content, and the oxidation rate of Nb-10Si alloy was more than twice as many that of Nb-20Si alloy. By alloying of W, the oxidation resistance of Nb-20Si-10W alloy was improved significantly, because the WO3 scale can provide the adherence for the creaked Nb2O5 scale and reduce the diffusion of oxygen through the scale. Comparing to alloying with W, the poor oxidation resistance of Nb-20Si-10W-10Mo alloy was attributed to the evaporation of MoO3 and highly porous scale. The microstructures were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM). X-ray diffraction (XRD) was used for phase identification of the samples. The compositions were analyzed by electron-probe micro-analysis (EPMA). Results indicate that Nb/Nb5Si3 (c)omposites up to 99.59% of theoretical density are fabricated. W can be perfect solid-solutioned in Nb/Nb5Si3 Composites, and the microstructure of Nb/Nb5Si3 composites is not changed, but the microstructure of Nb/Nb5Si3 composites is obviously changed after addition of W-Mo, Nb monophase, the solid solution of W and Mo in Nb, and the solid solution of partial Nb in W appear, but the solid solution phenomena of Nb5Si3 is not detected.
